What is Tramadol?
This is a painkiller used for moderate to moderately severe pain. It is an opioid analgesic but has some characteristics that set it apart from other standard opioids.
How Tramadol Works
Mechanism of Action of Tramadol
1. Opioid Receptor Agonist (Like Traditional Painkillers)
They are responsible for pain modulation, the same receptors that are activated by much stronger opioids such as morphine or oxycodone.
Pain signal transmission from the periphery to the brain is blocked by binding of tramadol to these receptors, hence its analgesic effects.
The effects on the mu-opioid receptor are intermediate im contrast to the stronger ones, and hence often tramadol is considered a lower-risk opioid, although the risk for dependence or side effects still does exist.
2. Inhibition of Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake
Tramadol also acts like some antidepressants by inhibiting the reuptake (reabsorption) of serotonin and norepinephrine.
This mechanism acts as a good sniper against nerve-related (neuropathic) pain; usually, a very difficult form of pain to treat using standard opioids and here the synergy comes into play.
